Receiving Access to Edit an Extension Website Section

Understanding Expectations for Website Section Editors

Any employee can become a website section editor, and editing a website section can be easy.

However, before beginning please understand that it takes practice, patience, and trial-and-error. Your self-guided training may take 4-8 hours, and it may require more depending on the needs of your website. The steps for your training are indicated below. Please keep your skills current by editing your website section regularly. If you do not have the available time or patience to be a website section editor, please discuss this in your with your supervisor or department.

1

Understand Extension Web Structure (Less Than One Hour)

Watch "Extension Website Ecosystem, and Editor Overview For Publishing Research" (15 minutes)

Watch a portion of this training which was delivered on March 26th, 2020. This training was provided to USU Personnel after Annual Conference. It explains website structure from the 4:30 to 16:00 mark.

Understand the Extension Website Management/Editor Hierarchy (30 minutes)

Understanding the organization of website structure will help you understand if a new website section editor is needed for your website section, or if you should take a different approach. A website section does not need multiple editors. This "Extension Website Management/Editor Hierarchy" visualization helps website section editors and owners understand who they should request assistance from.

2

Receive Assignment From Website Section Content Manager (Quick)

Each website sections needs a website section editor, and those must be assigned by the website section owner. Only one website section editor is needed for each website section; exceptions must be discussed with the Extension Website Administrator. Requests from anybody else will not be honored. A website section editor may perform that role for multiple website sections (in fact, we suggest this).

3

OU Campus Introduction Training (Approximately 1 hour)

To help new content managers get familiar with OU Campus, they are required to take the online training through the USU Learning System before receiving access. To take the training, hiring paperwork must be complete, and you need to set your preferred email in Banner, before you can access this training. Please note that you will need to access this using Chrome or Safari, not with Firefox.

4

Request Access (Quick)

Once users understand how Extension website sections work together, and have taken the required training, they may request access.

5

Tutorials, Trainings & Resources (Depending on Needs - 1-8 hours each)

After access is granted it is the responsibility of the website section editor to edit their website section, and to learn the skills to do so. Website sections which have more features (news feed, directories, etc...) may require more work than a website section that only needs minor updates from time to time.

Below is a link to Essential trainings and resources which will help you get started and grow your web editing skills. You should refer back to these resources before asking for additional assistance. Revisiting these regularly will help you to see what options are available at USU, and new options may become available between visits.

Please follow the 'Essential Trainings' link and go through the 'Essential Trainings & Resources' section for your initial training.

Important!
It is critical that you take the time to visit and thoroughly review the Essential Trainings in the above link. Realistically, having a great website section that is accessible to all and user friendly will be the result of the effort you put into learning website editing.

6

Request Help

As shown in the Extension Website Management/Editor Hierarchy, there is an order to requests. Website section editors and owners should first reach out to program coordinators for help; program coordinators work with the Extension Website Administrator if they need help; and as appropriate the Extension Website Administrator requests help from USU PR&M or the USU Web Team.

Continuing Education

As a member of the USU Web Community, you have many opportunities for continuing education. You are invited to participate in the annual USU Web Conference (held in May), and any of the group trainings offered throughout the year.

An on-line refresher course is available for those who are returning to active editing of OU Campus websites and need their access reinstated.
