Involving Kids in the Kitchen – keeping kids involved and interested in family mealtime

Want to get your kids more involved in the kitchen? This post shares practical tips and creative ideas to help children of nearly any age take part in cooking. From meal planning to prep work and even cleanup, involving kids in the kitchen offers countless benefits—building confidence, teaching life skills, and creating meaningful family moments along the way.
The Benefits:
- Encourages adventurous eating
- Increases vegetable consumption
- Teaches children important life skills
- You can model healthy habits to your kids
- Kids learn responsibility, planning, and organization
- Being in the kitchen together promotes bonding
- Kids build confidence
Ways to Get Kids Involved:
- Try meal planning with your children-Ask them to name a meal or two they would like to have the following week.
- Take it to the store- After you've made your meal plan and grocery list, take your kids to the store with you. Have them help pick out which fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks you will have that week. They will be more excited to eat the food because they helped pick it out!
- Make them a chef- When someone gives you an important job, you get it done with your best effort. The same goes for kids! If we give them an important job in the kitchen, they will feel trust from you and they will want to consume the foods that they helped prepare. Depending on your child's age you could have them try the following: stir, pour ingredients in a bowl, measure ingredients, knead dough, rinsing produce, or cut soft foods with a butter knife. No job is too small!
- Clean up, clean up- Lots of hands make light work. Assign your kids clean up jobs to do after mealtime is over. It might be hard to give up control and let them learn how to do these chores in the beginning, but long-term it will teach them important skills they will use throughout their life and it will make your life easier too!
- Go green- Let kids help in the kitchen by giving them a project. Gardening is a great way to save money and teach important skills. Have them help plant seeds, water and weed. Then when it comes time to harvest, they are able to see the benefit (and taste) of hard work. Even if it’s just basil in a flower pot, there are easy ways to grow your own food that are fun and help save money in the long run. Your kids will learn how produce is grown and be more inclined to try it!
