Healthy BBQ Chicken Pizza Recipe

Who says pizza can't be healthy? When you make pizza at home, you choose your own toppings to create a nutritious meal. Today I made a Healthy BBQ Chicken Pizza with homemade BBQ sauce and homemade pizza crust

In this post you'll find a recipe for BBQ Chicken Pizza, the crust and the sauce. But if you're short on time, you can always use alternatives like pita bread, tortillas, or bagels. 

Easy No-Cook BBQ Sauce Recipe

When you make BBQ sauce at home, you avoid the preservatives and additives that the store-bought option may contain. Plus, you may find you like the flavor better!

This recipe is quick and easy. Simply combine all ingredients in a blender and viola! You have homemade BBQ sauce.

Ingredients for Easy No Cook BBQ Sauce:

  • 1/4 C Diced Onion
  • 1/4 C Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 C Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 1/2 T Honey
  • 1/2 T Yellow Mustard
  • 1 (6oz) can of Tomato Sauce
  • 1 T Minced Garlic
  • 1/4 C Water


Place all the ingredients in a food processor. Blend until smooth. This recipe makes about 2 cups of sauce.

Basic Pizza Dough Recipe

Next comes the Homemade Pizza Crust. Basic Pizza Dough is an easy recipe. If you're in a time crunch, you can buy a pre-made pizza crust from the store. Or you could use bagels, pita bread, English muffins... get creative!

Basic Pizza Dough Ingredients: 

1 Tbsp active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (105-115° F)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp honey
¼ tsp salt
2-4 cups all-purpose flour or half all-purpose and half whole wheat

Basic Pizza Dough Directions: 

  • Mix the yeast and water in a small bowl, cover and let stand until foamy (5-10 minutes). Mix the oil, honey, salt, and yeast mixture into a large mixing bowl. If using a food processor, add 1 cup of flour at a time, up to 3 cups, mixing well after each addition. Or mix in all 3 cups of flour with a wooden spoon. If dough seems sticky, mix in more flour, ¼ cup at a time until dough is soft. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead in more flour (1/4 cup at a time) until dough is moderately stiff and somewhat firm to the touch (about 6 minutes). Lightly grease pizza pan(s) or cookie sheets) with oil. Divide dough into 2-3 balls for thin-crust. Roll each ball out with a rolling pin and gently stretch out.
  • Let dough rise while you make sauce and continue with pizza recipe of your choice.

BBQ Chicken Flatbread Recipe

While you wait for the dough to rise, assemble the rest of the ingredients.

For this Healthy BBQ Chicken Pizza, you are going to want:

  • 1 Pizza crust
  • 2 Chicken breasts (cooked and diced)
  • 1/4 Diced red onion
  • 1/2 C Diced cilantro
  • 1/2 BBQ sauce
  • 4 Minced garlic cloves
  • 1-2 T olive oil
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: green bell pepper, olives, green onion

Sprinkle your toppings evenly across your crust, and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it for 10-15 minutes or until your cheese begins to brown. And enjoy!
