Local Businesses Supporting Dark Skies

In the heart of southern Utah’s red rock country, where stargazing is a world-class experience, a local nonprofit is helping businesses take a stand for the night sky. Stellar Vista Observatory (SVO), based in Kanab, Utah, created the Kane County Friends of the Night Sky program to highlight and support local businesses that value dark skies.

Why Business Support Matters

Like many places, Kane County faces growing light pollution from development and outdated lighting. Local businesses have a unique role to play. By joining the Friends of the Night Sky, they help keep the night skies dark—and the region attractive to both tourists and residents. The growing network of supporting businesses is also a signal to local policy makers that there is a desire to protect the night sky.

This entirely voluntary program recognizes businesses that choose to be part of the solution to light pollution. By joining, participating businesses demonstrate:

  • Awareness of the importance of dark skies to the quality of life and local tourism
  • Willingness to improve their outdoor lighting
  • Support for dark skies that is visible to customers, city/county officials, and the community

The images below show how two local businesses adjusted their outdoor lighting to be more night-friendly, and are now providing an example for others.

Joining the Program

Participating businesses undergo a lighting inventory conducted by an SVO representative to identify ways they can improve their  outdoor lighting. Once at least 60% of the business' exterior fixtures are dark sky friendly, the business receives a window decal to display (similar to Yelp or TripAdvisor stickers) and is listed in a Friends of the Night Sky business directory on the SVO website.

The ultimate goal of the program is to preserve and restore the visibility of our starry night skies by increasing public awareness in the community.

Making a Difference, One Business at a Time

So far, nine businesses have joined, and several more are in the process of joining. Members include BaseCamp37, Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile, and Dark Sky RV, each of whom is sending a clear message: starry nights matter here!

“This program gives local businesses a simple way to say, ‘We see value in preserving starry skies,’” says Sylvia Sims, board treasurer of Stellar Vista Observatory. “And when they do, it shows local leaders that preserving the night sky is important to the community and benefits the regional economy.”

Looking Ahead

Stellar Vista Observatory continues to host both public and private night sky experiences and collaborate with local businesses on outreach and education. In collaboration with the Kane County Water Conservancy District, SVO will break ground on its public astronomical observatory building this year. As the Kane County Friends of the Night Sky network grows, it strengthens the community's ability to protect an integral part of the region's heritage, its naturally dark nightscape.
