Quarterly  CONNECTIONS - A Shared Stewardship of Quality Night Skies

The Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative will be hosting a new Quarterly CONNECTIONS series of educational-interactive meetings starting April 5th.

We hope to reconnect with the dark sky community, as the movement to support naturally dark skies has a rich history and recent momentum that is quickly gaining attention, particularly with astro-tourism as an economic asset for rural communities. We will restate the Cooperative’s mission and commitment to protecting the night. Through organized discussion with key speakers, stakeholders, and experts in the field, and a meeting format that allows for brainstorming on audience-directed topics, together, we want to explore and relay new approaches for preserving the night that can help educate and empower our communities.

The Quarterly CONNECTIONS meetings will focus on the following topics:
(all meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month)

Protecting the Night Sky – Wednesday, April 5

Economic Development Opportunities – Wednesday, June 7

  • Explore the ways dark skies can help sustain healthy, outdoor-oriented lifestyles and further the economic stability of individuals, families, and communities throughout the region
  • Hear from Dr. Jordan Smith, Director of the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University, on some of his latest research from a state-wide study on the economic impacts of astro-tourism in Utah
  • Read Jordan Smith's biography

Education and Outreach/Advocacy – Wednesday, September 6

  • The focus of this session will be determined based on audience feedback received in prior meetings.

Advancements in Reducing Lighting Impacts – Wednesday, December 6

  • The focus of this session will be determined based on audience feedback received in prior meetings.

We have key speakers lined up for the first two sessions. For the meetings planned later in the year, we want to hear from you to ensure we address recent successes and most salient needs to support your work and communities. We encourage attendees to come prepared to each session to engage in a brief facilitated brainstorming session and to complete the feedback survey that will be sent immediately following the meeting to all registrants.

These live Zoom meetings will be recorded and posted to the Quarterly CONNECTIONS webpage. Registration is free and open to anyone. A separate registration is required for each session.

Registration links can be found on the Quarterly CONNECTIONS webpage.

Join us as we share in the stewardship of quality night skies on the Colorado Plateau and beyond.
