Calf Health & Colostrum

Practical, research-based information for supporting calf health, colostrum management, and successful passive transfer.

Supporting Healthy Dairy Calves

Good calf health starts with strong newborn management and effective colostrum practices.

Colostrum provides newborn calves with antibodies and nutrients that are essential during the first days of life. Proper collection, handling, timing, and feeding can help improve passive transfer and support calf health and performance.

USU Dairy Extension provides practical and technical resources for dairy producers, consultants, veterinarians, and other professionals working to improve calf health and colostrum management.

Calf Passive Transfer Evaluation

Want to know how well passive transfer is working in your herd?

USU Dairy Extension can work with your operation to evaluate passive transfer in young calves and identify opportunities to improve colostrum management.

  • Collect blood samples from at least 10 calves between 2–7 days of age.
  • See how serum is separated and evaluated using a Brix refractometer.
  • Receive a summary of herd results compared with industry benchmarks.
  • Identify practical management changes and resources based on the results.
