Weber County 4-H STEM Contests & Challenges

Monthly STEM Challenges

Show your creative side!  Weber County 4-H STEM is offering monthly challenges to any Weber County youth age 8-18.  Each month a new challenge will be extended and each youth who completes it can bring it to the 4-H office for a prize.  See below for the monthly challenges.

Invention Convention

Date: February 12, 2025

Calling all artists, entrepreneurs, & engineers!  Open to ALL Weber County youth grades K-12.

Develop an invention to solve a problem in your life, in the life of a loved one, or in the world around you.  Bring a drawing or a prototype and present it for a chance to compete at the state and national level.

Pixelation Contest

Submit entries by April 11, 2025

In this contest, youth will use Computational Thinking strategies to make their own pixelation picture using a medium of their choice (such as graph paper, Perler beads, diamond art, Legos, quilting, digital art, Minecraft, etc.)

Digital Arts Contest

Submit entries by April 11, 2025

A fun online competition focusing on Photography, Videography, Graphic Design, 3D Art Design, and Artificial Intelligence Art.  Participants will submit their work via ZSuite and can enter one project for each category.

Fat Quarter Contest

Dates:
- Register at 4h.zsuite.org by Fri. June 20th at 5pm
- Pick up your fabric at the 4-H Office between Mon. June 23rd to Fri. June 27th (8am-5pm)
- Turn in your finished project at the 4-H Office by Mon. July 21st at 5pm

The Fat Quarter Design Challenge is a crossover STEM contest between engineering and textile production. This contest challenges you to create a design to fill a need, and enter it into our design challenge.

Upon registration, a Fat Quarter will be provided to you from our Office.  Deliver your entry to the 4-H Office by the deadline. You must also submit an artist statement. See ZSuite for instructions.

What is a Fat Quarter?  A Fat Quarter is a piece of fabric cut 18” off the end of the bolt, and then cut in half on the fold.  Four of these put together still make up 1 yard of fabric.  A fat quarter is usually 18” x 21” of fabric.

Drone Contest

Date: April 25, 2025

Flying the drone, participants have five minutes to complete as many tasks as possible on the Martian Landscape. Tasks include taking images on the surface, recording video of aerial objects, and flying through obstacles.

Weber Drone Playbook

To participate in the yearly Weber County Drone Contest, you must have completed the Mission to Mars: Rovers and Drones workshop series at some point in your 4-H career. Those who have completed this program will be invited to participate in the Weber County Drone Contest.

Scratch Coding Contest

Submit entries by July 28, 2025

Scratch is a coding language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations-- and share your creations with others around the world.  As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.  Scratch is a project of the Scratch Foundation in collaboration with the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.  It is available for free at https://scratch.mit.edu

Enter the Weber County 4-H Scratch Competition!  You may enter in any (or all) of the following categories.  

-Game (Clicker game, virtual pet, jumping game, etc)
-Animation (Music video, animated story, etc)
-Interactive (Virtual greeting card, silly story, DJ mixer, etc)
-Other (Any project that may not fall under the above categories)
