Horse Program

Utah County 4-H

How to Get Started

Utah County 4-H is a great place for youth to begin their journey in the equine industry, offering opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive environment. Through the 4-H horse program, participants develop strong horsemanship skills, gain hands-on experience in horse care and riding, and compete in shows designed to match their age and skill level. Along the way, they build lasting friendships, strengthen leadership abilities, and benefit from positive youth-adult mentorship that fosters confidence and responsibility. By promoting positive youth development, Utah County 4-H helps youth become “Beyond Ready”—equipped with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed both in the equine industry and in life.

We have opportunities for youth with and without horses. See the information below to find your best fit.

I own/lease a horse.

Youth who have access to a horse are eligible to join our riding clubs. These clubs focus on developing horsemanship skills and preparing youth to compete in county 4-H Horse Shows.

To join a riding club

    1. Send an email to heather.thomson@usu.edu
    2. Include your:

I do NOT have a horse.

The Horse Science Series

No horse, no problem! We have opportunities for all equine enthusiasts!

The Horse Science Series is a great place for youth to learn all about horses, gain hands-on experience, and develop friendships with other 4-H youth. This program runs September - December of each year and is for ages 5-18 years old.

Once you have found the right fit, reach out to your club leader & start attending club meetings.

Costs associated with the program:

4-H is a cost-effective way for youth to get involved, learn, and grow. With an annual enrollment fee of just $10, families gain access to a wide variety of programs and opportunities. Most activities are free of charge, making it easy for youth to participate, and even 4-H shows are very affordable at only $15. This low-cost investment provides incredible value through hands-on learning, skill development, and fun experiences.

Youth can join more than one club and can be involved in multiple project areas. The opportunities with 4-H are endless!
