Happy Holidays

Dear 4-H Families,

Happy Holidays!

I love this time of year as we focus on giving thanks for what we have, look for ways to serve, help and give to others and for me, being reminded of the four focuses of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.  These qualities fit so perfectly with the 4-H Vision, “A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.”

This past year I have seen countless times where this has happened.  Youth and adults working together making positive changes around them.  Leaders gently guiding and inspiring youth to push themselves outside of their comfort zones as they try new things or take the lead in a project or service opportunity.  My heart has been touched numerous times as I have seen Senior age members mentor younger members by giving them encouragement and praising them on what they are doing right.

As we close 2023 and make plans for 2024 I hope that we will be intentional in our actions as we work together to make positive changes in ourselves, our clubs, communities, country and world.  I hope that you know how much you are appreciated and valued in your support and dedication of 4-H.  You are making a difference.  Each of our small actions combined together becomes large and significant.

Enjoy your holiday season and have a very happy and blessed new year!

Sincerely,

David Widdison

This year we are formatting the cover letter objectives differently for this portfolio contest.

Contestants have the option of answering each objective based on a) their actual 4-H experience or b) how to improve the 4-H program. Full points will be awarded for complete responses to either option.  Here are the objectives for each age group: Juniors, Intermediates, Seniors

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

Livestock Education Tests

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

From October through July, Weber County 4-H members in grades 3-12 can compete in the Livestock Education Tests. To participate, youth must be enrolled in 4-H (and enrollment fees paid). 4-H members can take the test online in ZSuite:https://4h.zsuite.org/. (Click on “Events” to find the current months test).
Awards are given for each species in each division.
Each month's tests are prepared for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and goats.
Each month will focus on a different chapter or two of the handbooks.
Youth can select the test for the species they are studying. They do not have to be raising that species to participate in the test. You can compete in all 4 project areas.
The tests are a combination of true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.
All the questions for the test come from the Ohio State University Resource manuals, which are available for purchase from the 4-H office. The cost per book is about $30 depending on the species.
This is an open book test with a time limit of 30 minutes to complete each test. Tests will close the last day of each month.
