Safe Livestock Handling

Definition
When working with livestock it is important to utilize proper safety measures and practices to protect the animal as well as yourself. Organizations such as the Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety and Health (UMASH), have created programs to study, teach and promote safe handling techniques in agriculture.

It is critical to be aware and understand the behavior of the species of animal you are working with. Understanding behavior can allow you to be better prepared for handling situations. Safe handling of livestock equipment such as squeeze chutes is also a necessity when working with livestock. Always remember to be patient when working with any species of livestock.
