This variety of Zelkova is native to Japan. It is related to the American Elm, but does not suffer from Dutch Elm Disease like American Elms do. It has a nice growing habit that stays fairly short, and also tolerates pollution making it a good street tree. It also has beautiful red leaves in the fall.

Leaf
Alternate, simple, and oblong. Sharply serrated edges. Green in the summer with red fall color.
Fruit
Dry, 1/8" drupe, ripen in the fall, varies in color from green to tan.
Flower
Not showy.
Advantages
Adapts to many different soil types. Highly resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Smaller in size.

No significant disadvantages.
