This Tulip tree, slightly smaller than the parent Tulip tree, is known for its variegated leaves. It has a dark green center with light green edges. It is a large tree so it needs plenty of space. The flowers are uniquely beautiful. It is moderately drought tolerant and will tolerate different soil types.

Leaf

Alternate, simple, and lobed. Dark green in the center with light green around the edges, yellow in the fall.

Fruit

Elongated, cone-like aggregates of samaras. Brown, hard, and not showy.

Flower

Range from green to yellow to orange. Resembles a tulip, blooms late spring to early summer.

Advantages

Adapts to many different soil types, moderate drought tolerance.

Disadvantages

Intolerant of shade, large tree, needs plenty of space for roots and limbs. Very sensitive to chemical herbicide drift.
