Texas Red Oak

This oak is often confused with the Shumard Oak although this variety is smaller and more tolerant. Its leaves are shiny, bright green in the summer and turn dark orange or red in the fall. Its acorns are reddish brown and need to be cleaned or new trees will easily sprout.

Leaf
Alternate, simple, and 3-5" long. 5-7 bristled lobes. Shiny bright green in the summer, deep red or orange in the fall.
Fruit
Acorns. Takes 2 years to mature, reddish-brown streaked with dark lines. 1/4" to 3/4" long.
Flower
Not showy.
Advantages
Adapts to different soil conditions, but does best in alkaline soils. Drought and heat tolerant. A fast grower for an oak.
Disadvantages
Acorns can be messy and easily root.
