Pinyon Pine

This pine tree grows in elevations between 4500-9000 feet, and is native to the Southwest United States. The nuts produced by this tree are edible and were eaten by Native Americans. This is also a popular tree around Christmas. For developed areas, plant in full sun with space for air flow.

Leaf

Needles, 1-2” long, spirally arranged fascicles, 2 needles per fascicle, bluish green to yellowish green.

Fruit

Cones, red-purple when young, brown when mature, produces Pine nuts.

Adapts to many different soil types, fragrant, edible nuts, pleasant shape and appearance.

Disadvantages

Intolerant of shade.
