Nannyberry Viburnum

This viburnum can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or as a tree. If grown as a tree, it can get to be 30 feet tall. It has white flowers in the spring, which is typical for most viburnums. It produces pitted blue-black fruits that attract birds and are edible. It tolerates full sun, different soil types, drought, and some road salt.

Leaf

Opposite, simple, ovate. 2-4" long, finely toothed. Dark green in the summer and reddish-purple in the fall.

Fruit

Pitted, blue-black fruit. Present September to December; edible.

Flower

White, blooms in May. Flat-topped cymes. Non-fragrant.

Advantages

Likes full sun, tolerates many soil types and drought. Tolerates some road salt, attracts birds and pollinators.

Disadvantages

Prone to mildew and may sucker heavily.
