This tree is native to Europe. It is extremely cold hardy and does well in the Mountain States. It is one of the first trees to produce green leaves in the Spring (purple in the summer), followed by white, fragrant racemic flowers. These flowers produce black clustered fruits. It is susceptible to black knot disease.

Leaf

Alternate, simple, obovate to elliptical, emerges green, red-purple in the Summer.

Fruit

Black, ¼-1/3” diameter, July-August.

Flower

White, fragrant, bloom in the Spring, 3-6” long racemes.

Advantages

Very cold hardy, one of the earliest trees to produce leaves in the Spring.

Disadvantages

Severely susceptible to black knot disease.
