This tree is a dwarf form of the Bristlecone Pine. It is slow growing, has an irregular habit, adapts to soils that are typically difficult to grow in, and is very drought tolerant. It may eventually reach a size of 4’x3’, but typically only grows 3 to 4 inches a year.

Leaf

Needles, 5 per fascicle, dark bluish green, 1-1 ¾” long, persistent for 14-17 years.

Fruit

Cones, cylindrical-ovoid, brown, 2-4” long, bristle at the end of each scale.

Flower

Monoecious.

Advantages

Adapts to many different soil types, slow growing, great for small areas, drought tolerant.

Disadvantages

Intolerant of shade, overly wet soils, or smoky air.
