This is a fast growing, deciduous conifer that can become very large. These trees can be found along the coast in the Redwood National Forest in California. It prefers moist soils that are slightly acidic. It is best used when there is plenty of space as a specimen tree or as a hedge tree.

Leaf
Needles, opposite, linear. Feathery and fern-like with light to dark green colors in the summer turning to a red bronze in the fall.
Fruit
Cones, barrel-like, pendulous. 1" long, and brown. The scales look like puckered lips.
Flower
Cones, globose, 1/2", long, brown.
Advantages
Adapts to many different soil types but does best in well-drained soils. Pest and disease resistant, tolerates pollution.
Disadvantages
Can become up to 25' wide and 100' tall.
