Common Witch Hazel

Hamamelis virginiana

Common Witch Hazel is a bush that can get to be 20' tall in its native area. It does well in clay soils and full sun, but needs acidic soil that is moist. Its leaves are yellow-green during the summer. In the fall yellow flowers bloom from October to December. The fruit that is produced lasts through the winter.

Leaf

Alternate, simple, and elliptical. Yellow-green in the summer, yellow in the fall.

Fruit

Brown or copper colored, edible, maturing in late fall. Persistent.

Flower

Generally yellow, blooming in the fall October to December. 5 crinkled ribbon-like petals, fragrant. 

Advantages

No serious disease or pest problems, tolerates clay soils, prefers full sun. Low maintenance.

Disadvantages

Prefers acidic soils that are moist and nutrient rich.
