Common Hackberry

Celtis occidentalis

A large deciduous tree that grows in adverse conditions. It can handle a wide range of soils and urban pollution. The grey bark has a distinctive pattern with warts that turn into ridges as the tree matures. Galls on the leaves is very common, but do not damage the tree or cause any long-term adverse effect.

Leaf

Alternate ovate rough textured. 2-5” long light green leaves.

Fruit

Green changing to dark purple in fall. Sweet fleshy, round fruit. Birds consume and disperse the seed.

Flower

Insignificant.

Advantages

Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. Wet, dry, and poor soils.

Disadvantages

Fruit dropping is untidy especially on sidewalks.
