Chinkapin Oak

This oak is not as well known as other oaks, but is worth planting. It does well in high pH soils and dry climates. It can be somewhat drought tolerant. Its unique leaves and rounded growing habit make it an attractive tree worth planting. Make sure enough space is planned for this tree as it can grow to be 60' by 70'.

Leaf

Alternate, simple, and toothed. 4-6" long, dark green with yellow tints.

Fruit

Acorns about 1" long.

Flower

Not showy.

Advantages

Adapts to high pH soils and dry climates. Moderate drought tolerance.

Disadvantages

Messy seeds, requires some pruning maintenance.
