The American Filbert, related to the European Filbert, has oval-shaped dark green leaves with a bushy growing habit. It is known for its brown nuts, which is where hazelnuts come from. Low maintenance, but watch for suckering.

Leaf
Alternate, simple, and doubly serrate. Dark green mature color changing to a yellow or red color in the fall.
Fruit
Female flowers develop into clusters of green nuts surrounded by papery bracts that become brown when ripe.
Flower
Yellow 2-4" long catkins, bloom in the winter and early spring.
Advantages
Adapts to many different soil types and landscapes. Edible nut.
Disadvantages
Suckering.
