4-H Bright Ideas

Do you think you have a good idea for a business?

Watch this short video to see how you could win $1,000 to bring your goals to life!

The 4-H Bright Ideas contest is a platform for youth in grades 6 - 12 to learn about pitching their business ideas to future investors. According to the Journal of Youth Development, “When young people experience environments that nurture their needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, their resilience, concentration, and ability to connect with others grow.” Youth need opportunities to internalize motivation from incentivizing environments. Additionally, Utah parents have acknowledged a need for youth to gain work experience and talent development by identifying those skills as a top 10 career readiness need for their children. The 4-H Bright Ideas contest is designed to teach young people the skills they need to take control of their futures.

4-H Bright Ideas Contest Information

Preliminary Round:

Youth participants will be required to upload a video recording of their business pitch upon registration. Videos must be less than five minutes. Multiple youth may partner and present together, however only one youth will be awarded the $1,000 if selected as a winner. If multiple youth plan to partner on the pitch, they must all participate in the video recording. Video uploads may be any style: voice over presentations, video of the actual products, recording of a pitch, etc. Videos will be scored in a preliminary round according to the rubric. Please note points will only be awarded for pitch content. The video quality and editing will not be scored. Ten finalists will be selected by April 1, 2023.

Finalist Presentations:

Finalists will pitch their businesses live to a panel of judges. The final presentations will be held virtually on Zoom, or in person at the Davis County Extension Office on April 29, 2023. Finalists will have five minutes to pitch their businesses, and five minutes to negotiate with judges.
Youth who participate in person are allowed to bring props, presentations, product samples, etc.
Youth who participate on Zoom are allowed to share their screen, use virtual backgrounds, recordings, and may mail in any product samples, etc. ahead of time.
All presentations will be scored using the Finalist Rubric.

There is no cost to enter this contest. If you choose to pitch your idea in person at the Davis County Extension Office, you will be responsible for your traveling expenses.

You may partner with your peers to pitch your business. Both parties must be registered 4-H members and must register for the 4-H Bright Ideas Contest.
