Utah Seed: Growing Online and Bringing Local Expertise to More Customers
Utah Seed, a trusted agricultural supplier in Tremonton, has served farmers, ranchers, and homeowners for many years with reliable seed blends and region-specific guidance. In 2025, the company began a new chapter by bringing its products and knowledge online with support from the USU Extension’s E-Commerce Accelerator (ECA). The transition has already helped them reach new customers while continuing to support rural communities across the West.
For Utah Seed, the goal was simple: make high-quality information and products easier for people to access. Owner Orson Boyce explained, “From an e-commerce standpoint, we want to put the very best information that we can online for our region.” Much of Utah Seed’s value comes from helping customers choose seed blends that work with their land. Soil conditions, climate, and intended use all matter, and the team regularly answers questions about pasture mixes, cover crops, and turf grass. Their recommendations are tailored to each situation and reflect years of hands-on experience.
In one recent example, a customer preparing new ground for both a cover crop and fall pasture asked what would perform best. Utah Seed recommended options based on soil type and local growing conditions. Their practical advice is grounded in local knowledge and long-standing relationships with producers. “The seed business is a lot like real estate. Location, location, location,” Boyce said. “What works in Texas does not necessarily work in Utah.”

When Utah Seed joined the E-Commerce Accelerator, they hoped to make this guidance and their product selection more accessible. Within a few days of launching their online store, they received their first web order from a homeowner redoing their yard. “It was a thrill because we had only been online for two or three days,” Boyce said. “All of a sudden , we had a sale to show. We loved it.” Online sales grew steadily from there, and customers quickly gravitated toward blends such as the Utah 70/30 Turf Mix, Premium Turf Mix, and Elite Kentucky Bluegrass Blend.
Although the seed industry has traditionally been slow to adopt digital tools, Utah Seed saw how e-commerce could support their business. Boyce shared, “Five stars! I cannot say that enough. It has been good.” With the help of USU Extension’s E-Commerce Accelerator, Utah Seed now has a website that makes it easier for customers to browse products, place orders, and receive guidance that reflects the unique conditions of Utah and surrounding areas. From pasture mixes to homeowner-friendly turf grass, Utah Seed continues to demonstrate the value of combining community knowledge with online access.
