Creating Opportunity through Remote Work

For Cynthia Gebler of St. George, Utah, remote work offered a way to build a career that could move with her.
Splitting her time between states made flexibility important, but finding the right remote position proved more difficult than expected. After graduating from Utah State University Extension’s Certified Remote Work Professional© course in February 2024, Gebler explored different remote opportunities without finding one that matched her schedule and goals.
Instead of giving up on remote work, she found another path.
Gebler started a bookkeeping business as part of her husband’s consulting firm, Gebler Consulting LLC. Today, she serves as the company’s Bookkeeping VP, providing remote bookkeeping services to businesses while continuing to build her professional skills.
Upon completing the Certified Tech Sales Professional course, Gebler said, “The course gave me the tools and confidence I needed to navigate the technology world, an area I had not previously felt comfortable in, and take the next step toward starting my own business.”
What started as a search for the right remote job became an opportunity to build work around her skills and schedule. Instead of waiting for a position that fit, Gebler created one.
Today, she works with businesses remotely while maintaining the flexibility that first led her to explore remote work.
For Gebler, finding the right remote opportunity didn't mean finding the right job posting. It meant creating it.
