Answering Common Interview Questions

Prepare for Common Interview Questions

Most interviews include a set of common questions. Preparing your responses ahead of time will help you answer clearly and confidently.

Examples include:

  • Tell me about yourself
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses
  • Why are you interested in this role
  • Describe a challenge you’ve faced and how you handled it
  • Why are you leaving your current or previous job

When answering, focus on being clear, concise, and relevant to the role.

Use the STAR Method

A helpful way to answer behavioral interview questions is the STAR method:

  • Situation: Describe the context
  • Task: Explain your responsibility
  • Action: Share what you did
  • Result: Explain the outcome

This approach helps you provide structured, specific answers that show your impact.

Questions to Ask the Employer

At the end of most interviews, you will have the opportunity to ask questions. This is your chance to show interest and learn more about the role.

Consider asking:

  • What does success look like in this role
  • How does the team communicate and collaborate
  • What are the expectations for this position in the first few months
  • What opportunities are there for growth or development
  • Result: Explain the outcome

For remote roles, you might also ask about communication tools, team structure, and support systems.

Common Interview Tips

  • Practice your answers out loud before the interview
    • Keep responses clear and focused
    • Avoid speaking negatively about past employers
    • Be honest about your experience and skills
    • Stay calm and take a moment to think before answering
    • Bring notes if needed, but do not rely on them too heavily
    • Be yourself while maintaining professionalism

Confidence and preparation go hand in hand.
