Collect and Submit a Turfgrass Sample

Collect a 4″ by 4″ section with a 4″ layer of soil beneath the sod. The sample should be taken from the margin of the affected area which includes diseased and healthy grass. Photos are helpful in determining the possible cause.

Packing Sample for Shipment

Place the turf in a sealed plastic bag and place in a padded cardboard box.
Be sure to enclose payment for each sample (i.e., two separate samples that require basic services = $20.00, etc.).  During hot summer months, overnight or 2-day shipping will ensure fast delivery of a quality sample. Samples stuck on delivery trucks in extreme heat may not be good for diagnosis.

What is considered one sample?

A 4" x 4" section of grass with 4" of soil underneath. We understand that a section this small can be hard to collect depending on available tools. We will process anything that can fit in a gallon zip bag as one sample. However, we may only look at a 4" X 4" section of turfgrass that is submitted. If collecting a sample is done as described above, sending more grass will not aid in diagnosis (but will cost a lot more to ship).
