The Winter Solstice as a Time for Reflection

A Recorded Presentation with Michael Marlin, aka "Marlin" (re-shared from DarkSky International)

By Lisa Stoner, Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative, Coordinator

A history of light festivals, holiday lighting, and the dark sky movement

The winter solstice marks a time of reflection. As the sun reverses its cycle, our longest night will steadily return to a nearly imperceptible lengthening of day. The holidays, traditions, and ceremonies that surround this day present the opportunity to reconnect and discover new or even deeper meanings for what is important in life. As this holiday season unfolds, and families, friends, and culture come together, we are invited to reminisce, contemplate, and forge new paths forward. Whether we are reminded by the subtle movement of the cosmos or the communal actions and symbols that appear during this time of year, it is an opportunity to be embraced.

For the December spotlight for the Dark Sky Cooperative Newsletter, we are re-sharing a rather impactful tribute and entertaining presentation on the "Festival of Lights" and its contribution to modern day holiday lighting and the dark sky movement, by Michael Marlin (aka Marlin), produced by DarkSky International, for it’s Night Matters virtual lecture series, on November 16, 2023. Marlin is an author, public speaker, entertainer, and dark sky advocate. Marlin brings to light the history, the religion, the myth, and the shared human experience that allows for a global, yet personal perspective as we celebrate the holidays this year.

Starting with the Book of Genesis, the presentation encompasses global traditions through time, as humans have experienced and expressed themselves through light and darkness. “Lights are fun, but you need the dark to see them, just as we do the stars,” says Marlin. You can see the impact of holiday lighting from space using NASA satellite imagery. How might one navigate a conversation about the value of preserving dark skies during this festive season, but avoid being seen as the neighborhood “Grinch?” Marlin suggests "the holidays are a reason to talk about stars and lights, but in a conversation that is built upon trust and makes us feel good.”

Not to be missed, we invite our readers to view this recording of:
