Workshops & Skills Training Day Outline

October 16th

Facilitated Workshop Day Overview

Collaboratively Creating a Path Forward for Outdoor Recreation Management and Gateway Community Planning

Outdoor recreation and gateway community challenges in the American West tend to cross jurisdictional boundaries, affect diverse interest groups, and be emotionally and politically charged. As a result, they are often rife with conflict and require collaborative solutions.

This training and workshop day will bring together outdoor recreation planners and managers, gateway community leaders, state and local officials, academics/scientists, and anyone else with an interest in outdoor recreation and gateway community concerns to explore how to productively navigate conflict and find collaborative solutions.

Workshop Day Outline

MORNING : A conflict competence training, which will be taught by Danya Rumore and Jordan Katcher from the Wallace Stegner Center Environmental Dispute Resolution Program;

AFTERNOON: Facilitated workshops on key visitor use management and gateway community planning issues, which will provide an opportunity for participants to:

  • Practice their conflict competence skills;
  • Connect with and learn from one another; and
  • Explore and co-create solutions for pressing challenges.
Participants are encouraged to attend the full day. The skills participants learn and practice during this day will be relevant for all aspects of their personal and professional lives. If participants are not able to attend the whole day, they are encouraged to attend the entire morning to complete the conflict competence training.
