The Basecamp Conference and Workshop includes guided field visits to observe case studies of successes and challenges in outdoor recreation management and gateway community planning from around southeastern Utah.

Outdoor Recreation Field Visits

State Parks & Trail Ambassadors
Hear about how Utah’s Division of State Parks has worked to increase capacity at Dead Horse Point State Park through investments in campsite expansions and improvements. Also hear about how the Division is working to create a brand-new state park - UtahRaptor State Park - to alleviate many of the issues associated with dispersed camping around Moab. Also hear from the Grand County Active Transportation and Trails team on their innovative Trail Ambassador’s program. You'll have the opportunity to hear about their efforts to promote safe and responsible recreation tailored to specific activities. 

Collaboration on the Colorado
Spend the afternoon on a spectacular float trip down the “Moab Daily” section of the Colorado River! Hear from the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands on how they have been working to mitigate conflict on the river. Also hear from the Bureau of Land Management on how they have been working to manage outdoor recreation use at the many campgrounds and trails located along the river’s edge. 

Gateway Community Field Visits

Tactical Housing Affordability
Learn about unique partnership structures between Grand County, Moab City, and local non-profits that allow them to strategically tackle the housing challenge! Join other participants on a tour of several affordability housing projects happening around Grand County while digging into funding sources, recent ordinance changes, and community feedback. Led by the Housing Authority of Southeastern Utah, this field visit will showcase projects from the Moab Area Community Land Trust and Community Rebuilds, as well as examples of private developers taking part in Grand County's recent high density housing overlay(CM Credits available for AICP members)

Reimagining Moab Main Street
What do you do when your main street is also a major highway and thoroughfare? Moab City has been asking that question for years, and has started working toward some answers! Led by city staff, join other Basecamp participants on a walking tour of main street Moab to learn Moab's history, the unique transportation challenges that come with having a major highway as your main street, and some of the unique strategies the city is planning to use to try and address them!
