Master Gardeners
Have you always wanted to learn more about gardening? Do you want to help others with your gardening knowledge? Here's your chance!
Class Description
Master Gardeners attend approximately 40 hours of classroom instruction and provide at least 40 hours of volunteer service through structured activities at the USU Botanical Center in Kaysville. They learn through classroom lectures, monthly labs, hands-on service, and other educational activities and events. The following are some areas of training the class offers (topics may vary from year to year):
- Basic Botany
- Soils and Fertilizers
- Irrigation
- Fruits and Vegetables
- Trees, Shrubs and Flowers
- Entomology
- Integrated Pest Management
- Turfgrass
- Plant Pest Diagnostics
Class Volunteering
Volunteering is the heart and soul of the program. The following are some examples of volunteer opportunities available to class members:
- Maintaining demonstration and display gardens
- Assisting with educational events
- Giving educational garden tours
- Assisting with plant diagnostic clinics and answering questions
- Harvesting and donation of produce raised in the gardens to local food banks
- Assisting with USU Botanical Center Farmers Market
- County fairs and gardening events
After completing the course requirements and volunteer hours, Master Gardeners receive a certificate of completion. Many Master Gardeners find the community service so enjoyable they continue and participate in more advanced opportunities like the Docent Program.
