Madison Fulton

Biography

Madison Fulton, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, works for the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. in the Health and Human Services Department as a Health Promotion Specialist. In her current career, she provides training and technical assistance on chronic disease prevention in Tribal communities and strengthening victim service outreach to American Indians/Alaska Natives who are sexual assault victims/survivors. Madison earned a master’s degree in American Indian Studies: Indigenous Rights and Social Justice at Arizona State University in 2015 and is currently working toward a second master’s degree in public health from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Madison’s presentation, Historical Trauma & Cultural Resilience: An Overview, will discuss colonization’s negative impact on the identity, cultural practices, language, and ancestral lands of American Indians, and how cultural resilience has become a force in overcoming and moving beyond historical trauma. She will explain how to use these concepts, which are specific to American Indians, to influence trauma-informed approaches and strategies when working with American Indians.
