Smart Steps for Stepfamilies
Welcome to Smart Steps
We’re glad you’re here! Smart Steps is a fun, research-based course offered at no cost to adults living in Utah with a child from a previous relationship or stepchild through a current relationship. During our time together, we’ll cover family-strengthening topics including:
- Creating family unity
- Building a strong couple relationship
- Healthy communication
- Navigating conflict
- Strategies for successful co-parenting
- Stress management
Sessions are held in-person or online in group settings. We can also bring Smart Steps to those interested in hosting a course. Most groups meet 2 hours at a time for 7 consecutive weeks of awesome relationship education. Participation with your partner is encouraged, but not required. Continued funding of this program depends on course completion, so please plan to attend all classes in your session. We look forward to meeting you!
*Successful completion of this program qualifies participants for the Utah Marriage Commission Marriage Education Discount ($20 off your online wedding license fee). Click here for more info: https://extension.usu.edu/strongermarriage/utah-med/index

When asked what they learned from this course, participants said:
“This class showed me that we’re not alone. It was great to meet other people in similar situations and share ideas through fun activities and discussions.”
“I love that this class helped me and my partner learn and discuss important topics at the same time. We were both getting the information together. It really strengthened our relationship.”
“The facilitators were awesome - warm, knowledgeable, and super helpful!”
“It helped reassure me of the things I’ve been trying that are on the right track. It gave me peace-of-mind that even if I’m not doing things perfectly, my kids can be ok. It also helped me develop a better understanding of what my partner is experiencing as she’s becoming a stepparent.”
“I loved the stories and analogies that were shared. It was helpful to hear others’ personal experiences and what they learned that can be used to help me make more informed decisions as I confront similar hurdles in my life.”
“This course far exceeded my expectation. I highly recommend it to all stepfamilies!”
