Granite Communities Youth Court
Granite Communities Youth Court is a restorative diversion program that provides schools and law enforcement with an alternative response to rule violations and low-level offenses. Rather than focusing solely on punishment, Youth Court helps young people take responsibility for their actions, understand the impact of their choices, and develop skills that support future success.
Through a peer-led hearing process, youth are held accountable while building positive connections, strengthening decision-making skills, and staying engaged with their school and community.
Why Refer a Student to Youth Court?
For schools, Youth Court reinforces expectations through restorative practices and skill development. For school resource officers and law enforcement, it offers an effective early diversion option that balances accountability with prevention and support.
Youth Court helps:
- Increase student accountability
- Reduce repeat behavioral concerns
- Strengthen school connectedness and positive peer relationships
- Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Address underlying risk factors before they escalate
- Provide meaningful consequences without formal justice system involvement
The Youth Court Process
Youth meet with a trained panel of peers to discuss their choices, take responsibility for their actions, and identify positive next steps. Together, the panel, youth, and parent or guardian develop a personalized disposition that promotes accountability, skill-building, and positive behavior change.
For schools and school resource officers, Youth Court provides a meaningful consequence that helps reduce future behavior concerns while keeping youth connected to their school and community.
