Weber County 4-H Newsletter
December 2022

Happy Holidays!

I love this time of year as we focus on giving thanks for what we have, look for ways to serve, help and give to others and for me, being reminded of the four focuses of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.  These qualities fit so perfectly with the 4-H Vision, “A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.”

This past year I have seen countless times where this has happened.  Youth and adults working together making positive changes around them.  Leaders gently guiding and inspiring youth to push themselves outside of their comfort zones as they try new things or take the lead in a project or service opportunity.  My heart has been touched numerous times as I have seen Senior age members mentor younger members by giving them encouragement and praising them on what they are doing right.

As we close 2022 and make plans for 2023 I hope that we will be intentional in our actions as we work together to make positive changes in ourselves, our clubs, communities, country and world.  I hope you know how much you are appreciated and valued in your support and dedication of 4-H.  You are making a difference.  Each of our small actions combined together becomes large and significant.

Enjoy your holiday season and have a very happy and blessed new year!

Sincerely,

David Widdison

Community Christmas Giving Tree

Community Christmas

It’s that time of year! We are so excited to participate in the Community Christmas Giving Tree program again. This is an amazing event to be a part of and we are happy so many volunteers make it special for those families. This will help 2,000 children in our surrounding communities have a memorable Christmas and give the families some wonderful resources to help them in the future. There will be a Giving Tree with paper ornaments at the 4-H office starting November 7th for you to select to donate Christmas gifts for children in need. All tags and gifts must be returned to the 4-H office by December 9th

These ornaments include the following information:
*Gender and age of the children
*Donation suggestions for children such as: toy ideas, clothing/shoe size, hygiene items, etc.
*The ornaments suggest the general needs that the families we are serving have requested
   *Drop-off instructions
*The ornaments do NOT get assigned to a specific child. The donations get pooled together and put into the “Christmas Store’ area for the parents to shop from the items and select what their children need.

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

Livestock Education Tests

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

From October through July, Weber County 4-H members in grades 3-12 can compete in the Livestock Education Tests. To participate youth must be enrolled in 4-H (and enrollment fees paid). 4-H members can take the test online in ZSuite: https://4h.zsuite.org/. (Click on “Events” to find this month’s test).

Awards are given for each species in each division.
Each month's tests are prepared for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and goats.
Each month will focus on a different chapter or two of the handbooks.
Youth can select the test for the species they are studying. They do not have to be raising that species to participate in the test. You can compete in all 4 project areas.
The tests are a combination of true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.
All the questions for the test come from the Ohio State University Resource manuals, which are available for purchase from the 4-H office. The cost per book is about $30 depending on the species.
This is an open book test with a time limit of 30 minutes to complete each test. Tests will close the last day of each month.
