Weber County 4-H Newsletter
November 2023
Happy Fall!
Thanks to everyone who came out to our Fall Opening Social at Hunt Family Farm. We had a great time eating cookies and visiting with everyone.
We all feel that 4-H is a fantastic program and that it has positive impacts on our youth, but is there more to this than just a feeling? YES! The state just released the 2023 4-H Impact results.
State-wide 4-H youth are:
2X more likely to learn about the harmful effects of drug use,
2X more likely to resist peer pressure,
2X more likely to learn about goal setting, work ethic, career options and leadership skills than their non-4-H counterparts.
Weber County 4-H youth scored high on the 6C’s of Positive Youth Development demonstrating: Competence -96%,
Character – 100%,
Connection – 92%,
Caring – 100%,
Confidence – 96% and
Contribution – 100%.
In the Life-Skills category:
Strong work Ethic – 92%,
Problem Solving Skills – 92%,
Leadership Skills, 92% and
Teamwork 88%.
Thank you, parents and leaders, for helping instill these great values on our youth.
Think about the impact that 4-H could have in our community if we got more kids involved? We ended last 4-H year with 777 youth registered in Weber County 4-H. The best way to get more kids involved is to have more clubs for them to join. We need you to be a club leader! If you want to join is in making a difference and making an impact with our youth, call the office today and talk with Sharon or David on how you can become a club leader.
We are looking forward to having another great 4-H year, with your help it will be even better?
Best wishes,
David Widdison

-Students will have to design and build a carrier for the Sphero Rovers to carry rock samples on mars
-Students will have to design and build a hook and basket to rescue crew members via the drones

Jr. Livestock Education Tests
Jr. Livestock Education Tests
From October through July, Weber County 4-H members in grades 3-12 can compete in the Livestock Education Tests. To participate, youth must be enrolled in 4-H (and enrollment fees paid). 4-H members can take the test online in ZSuite: https://4h.zsuite.org/. (Click on “Events” to find the current months test).
Awards are given for each species in each division.
Each month's tests are prepared for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and goats.
Each month will focus on a different chapter or two of the handbooks.
Youth can select the test for the species they are studying. They do not have to be raising that species to participate in the test. You can compete in all 4 project areas.
The tests are a combination of true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.
All the questions for the test come from the Ohio State University Resource manuals, which are available for purchase from the 4-H office. The cost per book is about $30 depending on the species.
This is an open book test with a time limit of 30 minutes to complete each test. Tests will close the last day of each month.
