Weber County 4-H Newsletter
September 2023
4-H Clover

September is the start of the 4-H year.

We just had a fantastic summer filled with activities and had a great county fair filled with memories and great experiences, from the indoor 4-H exhibits to the Fiesta Fun Horse Show to the Livestock shows etc.

Sometimes when we think of 4-H we think about all of the great project areas that the youth can participate in.  But 4-H is really about Positive Youth Development and Leadership and we use the project areas to accomplish these goals.

Here is some interesting information for you.

4-H teaches youth leadership, citizenship, and life skills using a “learn by doing” approach and is an educational program that provides wholesome, fun activities for youth.

Some of the proven benefits of 4-H are that youth who participate are 2X more likely to go to collage or trade school.  They are 2X more likely to get better grades in school.  Girls are 2X more likely to pursue science careers over their peers.  4-H youth are 41% less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

As we begin this new year, I challenge everyone to get more involved in the many opportunities available at the county, region and state levels.  Breaking out of our comfort zones and doing something new and making new friends is also a big part of 4-H and helps increase your sense of belonging.

Here’s to a great new 4-H year!

Livestock Education Tests

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

From October through July, Weber County 4-H members in grades 3-12 can compete in the Livestock Education Tests. To participate, youth must be enrolled in 4-H (and enrollment fees paid). 4-H members can take the test online in ZSuite: https://4h.zsuite.org/. (Click on “Events” to find the current months test).

Awards are given for each species in each division.
Each month's tests are prepared for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and goats.
Each month will focus on a different chapter or two of the handbooks.
Youth can select the test for the species they are studying. They do not have to be raising that species to participate in the test. You can compete in all 4 project areas.
The tests are a combination of true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.
All the questions for the test come from the Ohio State University Resource manuals, which are available for purchase from the 4-H office. The cost per book is about $30 depending on the species.
This is an open book test with a time limit of 30 minutes to complete each test. Tests will close the last day of each month.
