Weber County 4-H Newsletter
June 2023
4-H Clover

4-H’s commitment to welcoming and supporting all youth is about people not projects.

People have feelings, ideas, aspirations and goals.  People can be kind, resourceful, explore new ideas, and make a positive difference in out world.  This all happens when people learn how to focus outward.  When people focus inward they become self-centered, view others as objects to be used or abused, and want others to agree with them and their point of view.

4-H uses projects to help kids reach their potential and experience positive youth development in their lives.  The wide variety of projects youth can explore in 4-H is incredible.  We started with corn crops back in 1902, and in the last 120 years we have expanded to include hundreds of projects within and outside of our agricultural roots.  We still have a strong tradition of agricultural education, but 4-H members across the nation and our world are learning, growing, and working in partnership with adults as catalysts for positive change in technology fields, the arts, social justice, and more.  4-H’s purpose is to provide safe, affirming environments for all youth to learn and work within the subjects they care about.  It is within these supportive environments that youth can develop the essential 21st Century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, compassion, and communication along with empathy and the other invaluable social skills they need to succeed.

All youth deserve a 4-H experience where they belong and feel safe expressing who they are, and we welcome and support them.  4-H wants everyone to feel safe and to have a sense of belonging in this program.

Best wishes,

David Widdison

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

Livestock Education Tests

Jr. Livestock Education Tests

From October through July, Weber County 4-H members in grades 3-12 can compete in the Livestock Education Tests. To participate, youth must be enrolled in 4-H (and enrollment fees paid). 4-H members can take the test online in ZSuite: https://4h.zsuite.org/. (Click on “Events” to find this month’s test).

Awards are given for each species in each division.
Each month's tests are prepared for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and goats.
Each month will focus on a different chapter or two of the handbooks.
Youth can select the test for the species they are studying. They do not have to be raising that species to participate in the test. You can compete in all 4 project areas.
The tests are a combination of true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank.
All the questions for the test come from the Ohio State University Resource manuals, which are available for purchase from the 4-H office. The cost per book is about $30 depending on the species.
This is an open book test with a time limit of 30 minutes to complete each test. Tests will close the last day of each month.
