From Retirement to the Classroom: Pamela Webster Finds New Opportunities Through Remote Work Training

Pamela Webster of Washington County joined Utah State University Extension’s Rural Online Initiative (ROI) to explore how remote work training could help others in her workplace. What she discovered was that the program also opened new opportunities for herself.

“As an older, and mostly retired, person, I knew that the idea of remote work would evolve into a goal,” Pamela said. “I signed up for the Certified Remote Work Professional© course thinking I would learn skills to help others, but I quickly realized it was equally useful for me. There was so much I could apply in many aspects of my life.”

Pamela also completed the Certified Sales and Communication Professional© course, which helped her develop practical communication skills.

“I was very nervous that this course was going to tell me how to aggressively sell,” she said. “Instead, I was reminded how to present information in a manner that it could be heard and understood.”

With support from ROI Program Specialist and job coach Becky Newman, Pamela improved her resume, refined her job search strategies, and built confidence in pursuing remote opportunities. She also expanded her presence on LinkedIn to connect with more professional opportunities.

Her preparation led to a new role as an adjunct instructor of psychology at Utah Tech University in St. George, where she will teach two classes starting Fall 2025.

“Pamela was a great student and invited me to share my knowledge,” Becky said. “The Job Coaching Program has truly made a difference in the success of our students, and Pamela is a wonderful example of that.”

Pamela said she is grateful for the program and eager to share its benefits with others.

“I am confident that, with my experience and the tricks of the trade I learned in the USU courses regarding remote work and securing that work, I have an edge over others who may be applying for positions,” she said. “I will be forever grateful for the opportunities to take these courses. I have spoken to others about this opportunity, encouraging them to look into what USU offers.”

Pamela’s experience with the Rural Online Initiative began with a desire to help others and grew into new opportunities for herself. Along the way she gained knowledge and practical skills for pursuing meaningful careers, and now she is creating space for her students to benefit as well.
