Instructions for Preparing and Packing Samples

If you have questions about what tissues (leaves, fruits, bark, etc.) need to be submitted for proper disease diagnosis, contact us with photos and information about your sample. We will let you know what tissues to collect and send.

See the table below for how to prepare different types of samples, and determine what constitutes a single sample.

  • Generally, leaves are the best tissues for diagnosis.
  • For wilting or dieback, include branches and a root sample (smaller roots from the location of the problem). Branches should be 12″ in length and 0.5″ to 1″ in diameter. Collect the sample from limbs showing yellowing leaves. Do not send dead wood. Photos are helpful in evaluating the possible cause.
Steps:
  1. Place any tissues in plastic bags. Sealed zipper-style bags are best. Do not place wet
