Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus

HOSTS
- Cucurbits
DESCRIPTION
Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is caused by an RNA virus called a potyvirus. ZMYV is primarily spread by aphids, although it can also be spread through the use of infected seeds.
BIOLOGY
ZYMV is primarily transmitted by aphids, including melon and green peach aphids. When an aphid feeds on the sap of an infected plant, they will also acquire the virus. ZYMV is spread non-persistently, meaning after an aphid has fed on an infected plant, they will only transmit the disease for a short period of time.
Using seeds from infected plants can also introduce the disease to fields and gardens.
SYMPTOMS
- Stunted and deformed growth of leaves and flowers
- Fruit that is discolored and distorted, including raised lumps
- Yellow mosaic pattern on foliage
GENERAL MANAGEMENT
- Use certified disease-free seeds.
- Manage aphid populations
- Dispose of plant debris and infected plants.
There is no treatment for ZYMV after infection.
