USU EXTENSION PARTNERS WITH LATINOS IN ACTION FOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Utah State University Extension, in partnership with Latinos in Action, will host the second annual Leadership Boot Camp Conference for middle- and high school-aged student leaders on the Utah State University campus from June 4 to June 7.
Three hundred Latino students from across Utah and Southern Idaho will gather at USU to practice and develop their leadership skills, listen to inspiring speakers, attend interactive workshops and learn about higher education opportunities.
“Because this conference focuses on applied leadership skills, the students will be able to use those new skills to lead their peers back at their high schools when the new school year starts this fall,” said Celina Wille, an assistant professor and Latino program specialist for USU Extension.
According to Wille, the conference builds upon what the middle and high school students learn through the Latinos in Action program.
Latinos in Action, or LIA, is a nonprofit organization that encourages Latino youths to graduate high school and pursue college. Students in middle and high school can enroll in an LIA class, which provides them service and leadership opportunities. Latinos in Action has chapters in 10 states, in more than 200 schools and reaches more than 6,000 students. Of those in the program, there is a 98 percent high school graduation rate.
Utah State University Extension provides research-based programs and resources with the goal of improving the lives of individuals, families and communities throughout Utah. To learn more about USU Extension, visithttps://extension.usu.edu/.
