Classes

Master Gardener volunteer training consists of an in-class lecture series from mid-January through April each year. Classes are offered in multiple county locations and range from 2-3 hours in length. Master Gardeners receive 13 weeks of college-level lecture and hands on training taught by Utah State University Extension Specialists and Extension Faculty. After completion of the training, USU Master Gardeners are required to provide a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer service back to their community.

Master Gardener Volunteers

The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer training program. After the in class portion, students are expected to donate 40 hours of volunteer time to University sponsored projects. Projects vary according to local community needs. The following are examples of typical projects.

  • Demonstration Gardens at USU sponsored education centers.
  • Plant/Pest Diagnostic clinics for the public
  • Public outreach at farmer's markets, fairs, and events
  • Public speaking on gardening topics

Volunteers must complete the course requirements AND volunteer hours to receive USU Master Gardener Certification.

Cost/Sign Up Information

Each county office manages their own registrations and sets their course price. Class fees may vary dependent upon materials provided, staffing resources needed, etc. USU Extension provides free or low cost classes, so prices charged reflect University cost recovery policy in this regard.
