Project Lead: Jake Powell

Fast Facts

  • Year: 2019
  • Client: Garfield County Extension
  • Outcomes: Conceptual planning, marketing, and approval documents.
  • Status: Complete
  • Project Size: 60 acres
  • Project Scale: Site
  • Impacts: The plan was presented and approved by the Garfield County council in the spring of 2019. The 3D archery tournament was successfully held in June of 2019 and leveraged $3,000 in county travel council funding while generated an additional $750 in event revenue. Of the 40 event participants surveyed, 25 were from outside the county and all respondents expressed an interest in returning to Garfield County to compete in the event again. The 40 respondents reported bringing an additional 111 people to the event and those who stayed in Panguitch stayed an average of 2.5 nights and planned to patronize local restaurants an average of 1.67 times during their stay. This represents outside revenue to local businesses during their typical shoulder season. Based on the success of the tournament the county is currently working with the BLM to acquire additional adjacent acreage to expand the course. They intend to improve the area including enhancing parking and adding bathroom facilities. The county is working to expand the course with the intent to establish Panguitch as a new destination for regional archery tournaments.

Project Summary

LAEP Extension provided analysis and conceptual planning to provide Garfield County Extension faculty with a plan that established the first 3D archery course in the region. This course was used to host the first 3D archery tournament in the county and is set to host future archery events that bring additional economic diversity to the county.

Project Description

LAEP Extension partnered with Garfield County Extension faculty to assist in developing a master plan for a 3D archery course located adjacent to their county shooting range. The plan was needed in order to conceptualize the course and was used to make a presentation to the county council to approve the use of the property. The plan became the basis for USU Extension to create, advertise, and host the first 3D archery tournament held in the county. In order to create the plan, LAEP Extension conducted a site visit and created a plan that outlined circulation paths, shooting platforms, and target locations to ensure shooting galleries did not overlap and create a safety concern.
