Flowchart of Design 4 Everyone Course Outline

Module 1

Module 1 is all about getting to know your landscape. You will start by creating a basemap drawing that accurately represents the existing conditions on your property. Then we will show you how to understand and analyze what you see in a site inventory and analysis. This sets the foundation for a good landscape design.

Module 2

In Module 2, you will decide what you want from your landscape design. Writing a vision statement helps you to identify your goals for the design. You can then use your vision statement to develop a program - the list of everything your design will include.

Module 3

Module 3 is where your design really comes to life. We will talk about how to make your space functional so that it is easy to use and maintain. Then we will talk about how to make your landscape beautiful using the elements and principles of design, ultimately allowing you to create a conceptual drawing of your design.

Module 4

To finish off the design process, Module 4 goes over what it takes to turn your ideas into reality. We’ll go over the details of landscape construction, plant installation, and other details you will need to finalize your design. This module will also help you determine if there are any permits you will need to implement your design.

Course Structure

Each module of the Design 4 Everyone course includes a variety of resources to help you learn the design process. There will be reading, images, and video explanations, as well as Action Items that invite you to apply what you've learned to your own landscape project.

To make the course as representative of the challenges you'll encounter in your landscape, Design 4 Everyone has been developed around a real property with challenges and opportunities of its own. To learn more about this site, The Olmsted Residence, watch the video!
