Welcome to Utah State University cooperative extension in Salt Lake County.  The Salt Lake County Extension provides informal education to you through workshops, mass media, demonstrations, 4-H clubs, Master Gardener Volunteers, telephone consultations, individual and group meetings, and educational bulletins.

Our focus is to provide unbiased research based educational programs that will enhance the quality of life for the citizens of the Salt Lake County.

USU Ext. Looking For Budding Master Gardeners for our 2009 Volunteer Training
 
Are you a vigorous and perennial person who wants to provide service to your community and grow in your gardening knowledge by becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer?  Utah State University Extension in Salt Lake County is inviting all who are interested in volunteer service through gardening to come to any of the orientations (listed below) on the Master Gardener Volunteer program.  Learn about volunteer projects where Master Gardeners are making positive impacts through education and research based science that serves our community including: Christmas Box House, Salt Lake County Jail Garden, Gilgal Garden, Tracy Aviary and Utah AIDS Foundation.  Master Gardener Volunteer training involves the equivalent of college level course (40 hours) in horticulture, passing a written final exam, and hands-on volunteer service learning (40 hours) to receive full certification.  2009 Training will begin in mid January and meet twice a week (T & Th) for 10 weeks.  Cost is $150 fee for training and materials.
* You must attend an orientation in order to apply for the training program.

August 9, 23 (Saturdays) 8:00 Am - 1:00 PM.  Our Master Gardeners have a booth to answer your questions about your pest or plant problems and provide information about our services. 
August (Mondays except holidays) 1:00 - 4:00 PM.  This Free service provided by Master Gardeners is open to anyone who needs assistance with their plant and pest problems. 
Aug 19, 2008 (Tuesday) 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.  Come learn about the benefits of eating whole foods vs supplements.  Taste samples from easy recipies that are healthy and good for you.
Aug 20, 2008. (Wednesday) 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. Come and learn about insects and their relatives and be able to identify the "good guys" in your garden.
Opening the Door to Home Ownership                                                          Aug 26 & 28, 2008 (Tues, Thu) 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM.  Topics include how to: prepare financially, determine the right home for you, find 1st time homebuyer grant programs, shop for a realtor, lender and title company, close the deal and handle life as a home owner.
Sept 3, 2008 (Friday). 12:00PM - 1:00 PM.  Sara Oldroyd will present this Free class on how to can meats, vegetables and soups.
Sept 23 & 30 2008 (Tuesday) 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. Cost is $10 for General Public, $50 for Bankruptcy filers.
