Southwest Junior Livestock Show 2013
October 25, 2012 -- Attention All Southwest Junior Livestock Show Leaders and Participants:
There have been a couple of important changes to next year’s Southwest Junior Livestock Show (SWJLS) we wanted to make you aware of as soon as possible to help you plan for next years show.
Over the past 15 years the SWJLS has grown tremendously. This has been a good thing and we are proud of both the size and quality of our livestock show. However, this rapid and consistent growth does present challenges. To try and balance the desire to have as many youth as possible participate with the need to keep the sale at a manageable level the committee passed the following rule change:
Participants may show up to two animals in any combination as long as they are different species, but may only sell one animal. The exception will be steers in which participants can show and sell two steers.
Some possible examples:
1) a participant could show a Lamb and a Goat, however they would have to choose which animal they would want to sell.
2) a participant could show a Steer and a Hog, however they would have to choose either to sell the Steer or the Hog.
3) a participant could show and sell two steers.
To facilitate this rule change we will switch the Market show and the Fitting and Showmanship contest. Therefore the Market show will be on Thursday and Fitting and Showmanship classes will be on Friday.
Participants showing two animals (except steers exclusively) will have to let the secretary know on Thursday which animal they plan to sell, if they fail to do so the show will determine which animal will be sold.
An additional change to the show will be the elimination of the Breeding Sheep Show due to lack of entries.
Please make sure all the youth interested in the Livestock show in your area are aware of these rule changes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help and your support of the SWLS.

Check List of Items for 2013 Southwest Junior Livestock Show
March 21, 2013
Dear Livestock Leader:
Once again it is time to start thinking about tagging animals for the Southwest Livestock show.
The procedure will be the same as last year.
First, exhibitors will have to bring Hogs, Lambs, Goats and Steers to a central tagging location to be tagged. Due to disease issues and to be in compliance with the State rule regarding Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, hogs will not be unloaded from the trailer they are transported in.
Second, tagging locations will be the same as last year. Please note the schedule locations and times:
Cedar Livestock Market June 4th 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Beaver County Fairgrounds June 8th 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Holt’s Feedlot (Beryl Junction) June 8th 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Iron County Fairgrounds (Parowan) June 8th 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Cedar Livestock Market June 15th 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Addresses:
Beaver County Fairgrounds 1400 East Hwy 21 (near Minersville)
Cedar Livestock Market 2290 West 400 North Hwy 56
Holt’s Feedlot 500 W 800 S Beryl Junction (3/4 mile west of Crossroads Equipment)
Iron County Fairgrounds 50 N 400 E Parowan.
All eligible counties (Iron, Beaver, Washington and Lincoln) will need to have animals tagged at one of the preceding locations and times. Please note that participants from Washington and Lincoln Counties cannot have entered animals at the Dixie Junior Livestock Show or the Clark County Fair; they must choose a show. If you cannot attend any of the taggings please make arrangements for someone to bring your animals to one of the taggings as we will not tag any animals on premise. No exceptions!
The big changes this year are: Participants may show up to two animals in any combination as long as they are different species, but may only sale one animal.
Entry forms will be due August 6th. Please Note: entry forms will not be accepted at the Extension Office. Entry forms must be completely filled out, complete with all signatures and entry fees and mailed to the Livestock Show - P.O. Box 684. In addition, showmanship classes will be made up from entry forms prior to the show. Therefore, if exhibitors do not indicate they want to participate in showmanship classes on their entry form, they will not be allowed to enter showmanship at the show. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
The following rules will be specific to goats. Goats must be meat breeds; namely Boer, Kiko or Spanish. Exhibitors can show does or weathers. Goats must be one year of age or less at the show and must be dehorned or have horns tipped.
The docking rule is the same as last year which reads: Market Class market lambs must be docked so that a representative from the State Veterinarian’s office is able to determine that at least one caudal vertebrae (a portion of the tail) is remaining and his determination is final. If you have questions about how to dock lambs to meet this rule or how this rule will be enforced you should contact a member of the sheep committee: Richie Stubbs, Ben Harris or Jonathan Burton.
Also please note: Market goats must weigh 60 pounds, Market lambs must weigh 110 pounds, Market hogs must weigh 240 pounds and Market steers must weigh 1100 pounds at weigh-in or they will be sifted.
In addition, all participants must be registered members of the 4-H or FFA program.
Please make sure all the youth interested in the Livestock show in your area are aware of the tagging dates and rule changes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help and your support of the 4-H program.
Sincerely,

Good afternoon --
You probably get quite a few questions from 4-H members and others about how best to prepare cattle for the showring.
To help answer many of these questions, the American Angus Association recently produced a two-part video for its junior members.
Both segments have already been viewed by more than 60,000 youth and parents alike during the last three years.
You can watch these videos by clicking on these links; Please feel free to share these (email, Facebook or website) with anyone who might be interested.
