Crop & Production Horticulture | Uintah County

Production Horticulture

Production horticulture is an important part of Uintah County’s agricultural landscape, supporting local food production, greenhouses, nurseries, and specialty crops. USU Extension offers resources on crop selection, soil health, irrigation, pest management, and season extension to help growers improve productivity and sustainably manage their operations.

Soil Testing

Soil testing is one of the most effective ways to use fertilizer dollars wisely and protect soil and water resources. Many producers skip the cost and time of a soil test and rely on a “standard” fertilizer mix. This may work if your fields have average fertility, but if they do not, you may be paying for nutrients you do not need—or missing ones that your crops require.

Testing every 2–3 years, or when rotating into a new crop, allows you to:

  • Apply only the nutrients your soil actually needs
  • Adjust fertilizer rates to match crop yield goals
  • Potentially save money on unnecessary fertilizer inputs

Grass hay, small grains, and corn will typically need nitrogen, which can come from manure, plowing down a legume, or fertilizer. The best way to determine phosphate, potash, and micronutrient needs is through a soil test.
