Description

Leaves: Needles in bundles of 2 or sometimes 3; 2-1/2" to 4-1/2" long; slender; curved; gray-green; evergreen.

Twigs/buds: Twigs light gray to gray-brown; rather thick.

Flowers/fruit: Monoecious. Fruit a woody cone; very short stalk; oval to conical; 3" long; red to yellow-brown.

Bark: Light gray and smooth while young, eventually becoming reddish-brown; ridged and furrowed; scales flaky; inner bark orange.

Wood: Information unavailable.

General: Native to southern Europe, northern Africa, and parts of Asia. Rehder says this is the same species as Pinus eldarica. Not cold hardy; adapted well to hot, dry desert climates. Needs little water. Shade intolerant.

Landscape Use: Use in warm desert climates where a pine is desired. Do not plant where it will encounter hard frosts on a regular basis. Zones 8-10.
