Description

Leaves: Alternate; simple; 3" to 5" long, 1" to 3" wide; deciduous; coarsely toothed to pinnately lobed; dark green and shiny above, paler beneath; petiole 1/8" to 3/4" long.

Twigs/buds: Twigs brown; medium-thick.

Flowers/fruit: Monoecious. Fruit an acorn; 1" long, brown, ovoid, no stalk; half covered with a cap with long, curled-back scales; matures in two seasons.

Bark: Gray-black; in checkered plates.

Wood: Information unavailable.

General: Native to western Asia and southern Europe. Intermediate shade tolerance. Acorns can be a nuisance.

Landscape Use: Very desirable tree that is rarely planted in Utah or elsewhere in the U.S. Tolerates drought, high soil pH, and clay soils. Interesting acorn and leaf. Zones 5-7.

Cultivar: 'Argenteovariegata' or 'Variegata'.
